While seated on the aisle on TTC Line 1, a rider told me to move to the window seat to “allow other people to sit.” I replied that anyone was welcome to sit beside me; another rider took the window seat. The first rider then complained and, when I asked what the issue was, escalated into racist remarks: “you all are the same” and “you all Indians are the same, mannerless.” I’m Bangladeshi. I began recording for my safety, and he continued with profanities (“fuck you,” “fing bitch,” “fuckinging bastard”). This was humiliating and frightening. I believe it was a hate-motivated incident targeting my ethnicity. Everyone deserves to ride safely in this city. This is hate, and it’s unacceptable.
