Crowded House lead singer Neil Finn wrote
Crowded House lead singer Neil Finn wrote "Don't Dream It's Over." He explained in an interview with Goldmine: "I wrote that on my brother's piano. I'm not sure if I remember what the context was, exactly, but it was just about on the one hand feeling kind of lost, and on the other hand sort of urging myself on: Don't dream it's over. That one actually fell out literally, without me thinking about it too much." "Don't Dream It's Over" is the biggest hit for Crowded House, which formed after the New Zealand group Split Enz, well, split. This was 1985; group members Neil Finn and Paul Hester (drums) teamed with Nick Seymour (bass) to form a new group, which they named Crowded House during the making of their first album - they were living together in a very tight space while working on the album in Los Angeles, thus the band name. Split Enz crossed the oceans with songs like "History Never Repeats" and "Six Months In A Leaky Boat," and they got on MTV with their zany videos, but for the most part they were little known outside of Australia and New Zealand. "Don't Dream It's Over" took a while to catch on, but when it did it became a global hit, reaching #2 in America, where it was held back by Aretha Franklin's duet with George Michael, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)." The next single, "Something So Strong," went to #7 in America, but they never again cracked the Top 40 there. The rest of the world was a different story. Crowded House landed lots of hits throughout Europe, particularly in the UK, and were a top draw in Australia and New Zealand. They took a hiatus in 1996 but returned from time to time and started touring again in 2007. Subsequent lineups often included Finn's musician sons Elroy and Liam When Crowded House reunited in 2016, Neil Finn explained that he's happy to keep playing this one. He told ABC: "I really enjoy singing it every time I do it, and I'm super pleased and proud that the song that is almost the most identifiable for us is, I think, one of my best songs." This was the one Crowded House song Fleetwood Mac performed on tour when Neil Finn joined the band in 2018. Stevie Nicks joined him on vocals for these performances and often gave the song a glowing introduction. We're going to credit this song for bringing the expression "hey now" back into vogue. That phrase is repeated four times in each chorus: Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in Another popular song that used it this liberally is "Iko Iko," a New Orleans favorite made famous by The Dixie Cups in 1965: Hey now, hey now Iko iko un-day In the '90s, "hey now" had a moment thanks to the transgressive HBO satire The Larry Sanders Show, where Jeffrey Tambor plays "Hey Now" Hank Kingsley, a character that uses it as a catch phrase. Neil Finn has joked that the song would have hit #1 in America if they titled it "Hey Now." In 1988, Paul Young of "Everytime You Go Away" fame sang this at the Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert held at Wembley Stadium. Broadcast around the world, the concert reached about 600 million people, many of whom heard the song for the first time thanks to Young's performance (he introduced it as a song written by Neil Finn). The song was on point for Mandela, whose fight for freedom helped liberate South Africa from apartheid. In 1991, Young released a studio version featuring Paul Carrack as a single. It charted in several territories, including his native UK, were it went to #20 . Neil Finn considers this a song of unity. When he performed it in Hartford, Connecticut with Fleetwood Mac on March 15, 2019, he dedicated the song to the victims of the shootings in Christchurch, where earlier in the day a gunman opened fire on two mosques. This song was used in the TV miniseries The Stand, which aired in March 1994. The miniseries is based on the Stephen King novel. It also shows up in the 14th episode of the rebooted Magnum P.I.'s fifth season ("Night Has A Thousand Eyes," 2023). Sixpence None The Richer
