Replying to @Gofawu to create the “painterly” effect in portrait photography you have to have an understanding of what lighting look you are trying to achieve and you have to know how to work with the light to achieve the effect. You can use stones and diffused light but you can also use natural light, un-diffused light or whatever. The key is knowing how to work with it to get your desired look. There are loads of photographs who use the exact same equipment that I do and achieve very different results either by choice or they’ve not yet learned how to achieve the painterly look if that is indeed what they are going for.
