We know that in order for our hands to look quiet at the posting trot, we actually have to open and close our elbows as we stand and sit. This allows the hands to stay in the same place instead of moving up and down with the upper body. (I have a video covering this on my page!) One simple tool I use to help riders get the feeling of this is to hand them hold a stick horizontally in both of their hands. As they post, I’ll have them think about keeping the stick resting either softly on the neck, or just slightly above. This depends on the horse’s confirmation and head carriage as well as the length of the rider’s arms. Sometimes it helps to lengthen the reins slightly for the exercise, as long as it is safe to do so! The goal here isn’t necessarily perfect position or perfect connection. It’s to get the feeling of the elbows opening and closing with every post. I find that sometimes when we can isolate variables and help riders understand how something is supposed to “feel” as opposed to explaining it verbally or visually, it helps for the pieces to come together more quickly!
