I’m a primary care physician and here’s what my healthiest patients have in common: 1. They have strong cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) This is one of the biggest predictors of long term health and longevity. In real life, that usually looks like being able to walk, climb stairs, and exercise without getting winded too easily. 2. Their blood pressure is in a healthy range A lot of people focus only on avoiding “high” blood pressure, but staying in a normal range matters for protecting the heart, brain, and kidneys over time. 3. They know more than just their LDL Many of my healthiest patients either have a great ApoB or at least know to ask about it. ApoB can give a better picture of cardiovascular risk than LDL alone in some people. 4. They eat enough fiber Not just for digestion. Fiber helps with cholesterol, blood sugar, fullness, and gut health. Most people are eating far less than they should. 5. They prioritize muscle They strength train, stay active, and preserve muscle as they age. Muscle is so important for metabolism, mobility, independence, and healthy aging. 6. Their metabolic markers tend to look good Things like triglycerides, HDL, blood sugar, and insulin resistance markers often tell me a lot about what’s going on beneath the surface. 7. They recover well Good sleep, stress management, and overall recovery matter. Health is not just about pushing harder. It is also about how well your body bounces back. 8. They avoid the obvious risk multipliers Smoking, excess alcohol, chronic inactivity, and poor sleep can quietly undo a lot of progress. 9. They stay on top of prevention The healthiest patients I see are usually not waiting until something feels very wrong. They come in for routine care, screening, and early conversations. 10. They focus on consistency, not perfection They are not perfect every day. But they do enough of the right things, often enough, that it adds up over time. The biggest takeaway? The healthiest patients are usually not doing one magical thing. They’re doing the basics really well, over and over again.
