@fascinatedbyfungi: Had a fantastic time at the Telluride mushroom festival with my friend Gabrielle Cerberville @🍄Mushroom Auntie🍄 . While we didn’t come across the dream porcini, we did find this big ol’ chonky #FlyAgaric #Amanitamuscaria. Easily the most recognizable mushroom in the world, it’s often maligned as being “toxic”, but as Gabrielle explains, it is also potentially trippy and or edible depending on how it’s processed. . A. muscaria DOES NOT contain significant amounts of muscarine (despite its name), but it does contain isoaxoles: ibotenic acid and muscimol. In its raw state, ibotenic acid is present in high concentrations in the red membrane on the cap. It is a relatively dangerous neurotoxin on its own, but can be decarboxylated (via low pH and heat) into muscimol, a far less toxic entheogenic compound. Muscimol is a GABA agonist and feels very similar to alcohol, inducing a state of relaxation and sleepiness at low doses, or uncoordinated delirium at higher doses (not euphoric like psil0cybin). . A. muscaria can also be double boiled (in two successive changes of water) to dilute out the toxins, making it perfectly safe to cook and eat as an edible mushroom. It has a firm texture and slightly nutty sweet flavor. . There is no danger in touching this mushroom.
