We often get asked what breed Wilbur and Palmer are and the full answer is Long Haired Miniature (English Cream) Dachshund 🐾 People always think they’re mixed with golden retriever but they’re not, they’re purebred dachshunds 🥰 they look just as cute and act just as sweet as a golden retriever but they’re about 1/10 of the size! The reason we wanted English Cream Dachshunds is because we move around a lot (hi, other military families, you get it), lived in an apartment, and love to travel. So, for us, it made sense to get small dogs but we LOVE golden retrievers. Our family dogs are golden retrievers so we have a huge place in our hearts for goldens. That’s how we found/fell in love with English Cream Dachshunds! I frequently see people talking about how “stubborn” dachshunds are, that they’re difficult to potty train and that they bark at everything. We have not seen that with Wilbur and Palmer and know plenty of others who haven’t either. I do have my masters degree in a field that utilizes a scientific approach to understand behavior in humans. I have applied that knowledge to my training with Wilbur and Palmer and that does contribute to my view on training dachshunds (and dogs in general). But dachshunds were originally hunting dogs, which means they can be prone to barking. Wilbur and Palmer love people, dogs, kayaking, playing in the snow and beach, and can hike 12+ miles. They’re fine when left alone at home, Palmer was potty trained in 1 week; Wilbur in 3, adjust to every new setting very well, they’re incredibly athletic and love to snuggle. We’ve worked really hard to give them the tools to live a happy, carefree life and continue to do so as we see areas of improvement. Keep in mind, Dachshunds are prone to IVDD so make sure you’re able to accommodate the needs of their sensitive backs. But I think no matter what breed you have, always do your research and make sure you are able to provide an environment that meets your dog’s needs and find a trainer that will do the same. Especially if you plan to adopt one so you know their learning history. Highly recommend looking for a dachshund-specific rescue if that is the route best for you and your family. #dog #dachshund #dogsoftiktok #dachshundsoftiktok
