Meet Ms. Vessie Tutt. She’s 99 years old and from St. John Colony, a historic Black freedom community about 30 minutes from Austin, Texas. In this video, she shares the story of her grandmother’s dress, which is over 100 years old. Her grandmother was a midwife who delivered her and passed away three months later. Though Ms. Vessie never got to know her grandmother, this dress provides a special connection to her. We interviewed Ms.Vessie for our documentary Rise, which explores the history of Black freedom colonies and communities in and around Austin.
