🐊Did you know there’s only been two fatal alligator encounters ever in Louisiana? We went on a field trip to Natchitoches Alligator Park to get some of this footage! It’s right around the corner from us! 🐊 The Louisiana alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) boasts some truly remarkable features that allow it to thrive in its wetland habitats. First, their eyes, ears, and nostrils are positioned on top of their heads. This layout lets them breathe, see, and hear while the majority of their body remains submerged, perfect for hunting prey by surprise. Furthermore, in low-light conditions, alligators display an intriguing eyeshine – a reflective tapetum lucidum – that gives their eyes a red glow, improving their vision at night. 💦 Alligators residing in the often brackish waters of Louisiana possess an extraordinary ability to manage their salt intake. Their tongues work as a barrier to avoid swallowing salt water when they drink. Additionally, they have specialized glands located in their tongues, which enable them to expel excess salt. This skill is crucial for their survival across a diverse range of aquatic environments they inhabit, such as freshwater swamps, marshes, rivers, and even saltwater habitats like coastal inlets. ❄️ Alligators rely on the external environment for their body heat as they are ectothermic. This can present a challenge during colder months, but they have an interesting response known as “icing behavior” or “snorkeling”. As the water or air temperatures decrease, they keep their snouts out of the water before it freezes. This approach ensures a breathing hole in the ice, letting them survive in a semi-dormant state under the frozen surface until temperatures rise again. This feature is a testament to the alligator’s impressive resilience and survival capabilities. #crawkid
