@mathandcobb: This is my very personal review of "Love Triangle" by Matt Parker, please watch until the end to see what I mean #math #mathtok #BookTok #bookreview #mathbooks #mathliteracy #stem
Can’t recall which scientist (Hawking?) was writing a popular book outlining their work and were told by the publisher something like “each equation” reduces sales X%.” 🫤🤷🏻♂️

I'm not nearly at your level but I'm a master student in theoretical physics and I feel the same. Sadly there's only ever pop physics with no maths or bland textbooks so I end up just reading (1)

So it does a good job getting people excited about using math, but does not seek to help show the beauty of math itself?

have you read Singh's "Fermat's last theorem"? on the one hand, I remember it as relatively deep on the math (though I read it a long time ago and before i had any formal education), but on the other hand, it's really in your research topic so you might get even more annoyed

I remember reading in the preface of "The emperor's new mind", by Roger Penrose, that according to his editor every equation he'd put in the book would halve its final sales.

I must say I disagree (although I of course haven’t read the book). What benefit does putting in proofs, more advanced eqns have on the book?

When is the right age to introduce advanced mathematics concepts? Most people have a high school understanding of math which means four function and basic geometry and algebra

I think this goes hand in hand to "educational" cartoons for kids and self study apps like brilliant or duolingo. They are there purely as entertainment that happen to look like science.

This is a very fair opinion. I like to read about math and physics and would agree. Many physics books are like this too. I prefer them to be more technical so I can glean as much knowledge as I can.

Are there any recommendations you have of books that strike this balance between 'pop-maths' and textbook style that you're talking about ?

Have you read "When Einstein walked with Gödel" by Jim Holt? Given your commentary it is not exactly full of proofs, but it still tries to here and there add the intuition behind a proof.

I completely agree with you. I rarely find myself (the less the better) in some maths events when they talk about HISTORY of math, when I just want more difficult and challenging things.

my favourite book about maths was "real analysis" by Jay Cummings
honestly made me wish that they'd started maths education with proofs instead of rote memorization

Have you read anything by James Tanton? I think you’d enjoy “How Round is a Cube? And Other Curious Mathematical Ponderings”

maybe it's just me, but I struggle to understand math without a pen and paper to work at it myself. even if it's sorta basic. So a I couldn't read a deep math book in bed

Have you looked at Penrose's "Road to reality"? Even though I have a PhD in a closely related area, I found many new ideas in it!

I read Walter Sawyer "Mathematician's delight" in high school, it was delightful. Also read "Life sciences library Mathematics blue book" published in 1972.. ended up with a maths Phd
