i feel like the limitations of the equipment back then resulted in more interesting tracks. sample based music just sounds more complex but with less effort.

Jungle/dnb basically same thing. You could argue that jungle techno ruled the first half of the 1990s succeeded by drum and bass. Both have break beats.
