She immediately followed protocol, washed her hands, cleaned up the spill, and moved on. Nothing seemed wrong. What nobody knew at the time was that dimethylmercury could pass straight through a standard latex glove in under 15 seconds, meaning the chemical had already entered her body before she even realized there was a problem. Months later, in November 1996, she began experiencing nausea and vomiting. Over the following weeks, her symptoms escalated rapidly: slurred speech, vision and hearing problems, and difficulty walking. By the time doctors connected her symptoms to mercury poisoning, the damage to her brain and nervous system was already irreversible. Despite aggressive treatment, she passed away in June 1997, less than a year after the exposure.
