I volunteered at a zoo in reptile building and people have no idea how many precautions they have to take when caring for venomous snakes. (Also why just owning them privately is so scary to me)

Thank you for your wonderful explanation. Unfortunately zoological facilities cannot just inherit all exotic pets when things go wrong.

maybe an unpopular opinion but I don't think just anybody should own a venomous snake just like lions and Tigers etc

Mites are no joke. A friend of mine bought a boa from what we thought was a reputable breeder. After months of fighting, she lost 90% of her snakes. Bio security is an absolute must

There is a huge difference between getting anti-venom in, let's say CA or AZ for a diamondback rattlesnake and getting anti-venom for a venomous snake from another country...

Not only that, but if other places take these animals, any yahoo who illegally gets a dangerous animal may think that once they can’t take care of it anymore they can just dump it onto someone else.

I have noticed that zoos don’t usually have many venomous snakes. I have most often seen rattlesnakes. I’m guessing that anti venom might be easier to get for them and that zoos are avoiding risk

Not to mention that he himself had just made it more difficult to get taipan antivenom, but using it up.

I quarantine new plants even if I trust the grower to make sure they don’t have bugs or issues. With animals there’s soooo much more that goes into it I can’t imagine doing it

When I was a teen in the 90s I worked for a private exhibit. We got mites and OPMV one year all because of donated pets. Nearly all the pythons died. It was horrific. Quarantine is a MUST.

If I remember correctly even snake discovery if they purchase from any other breeder (I’m going to assume they are all reputable?) go through a mandatory quarantine away from the rest of their animals

Mites are a pain. I've rescued two lizards with mites. One from a big box pet store that only one employee was able to occasionally care for. It took over 6 months to fully get rid of them.

we got this all the time at the aviary I worked at. people mad that we wouldn't take rescue birds. but we made a commitment to the animals already in our collection. their safety has to come first
