Remember when in 2022, at the beginning of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Elon Musk offered his Starlink system to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky? As you see from this video, Musk and Zelensky had a very friendly call back then… … Fast forward three years, President Donald Trump’s top diplomat, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has joined DOGE chief and tech billionaire Elon Musk in picking a fight with Poland’s foreign minister yesterday as the three squabbled over Musk’s Starlink system and its use in Ukraine. Yesterday’s three-way exchange was just the latest example of American foreign relations turning into a blame game as Rubio reiterated the White House’s position that Europe was insufficient with its praise and gratitude after three years of US support for Ukraine’s defense. The spat started when the Polish top diplomat said: “Starlink for Ukraine are paid for by the Polish Digitization Ministry at the cost of about $50 million per year. The ethics of threatening the victim of aggression apart, if SpaceX proves to be an unreliable provider we will be forced to look for other suppliers.” The statement set off Musk — and later Rubio. Musk responded: “Be quiet, small man. You pay a tiny fraction of the cost. And there is no substitute for Starlink.” So what’s the future of Ukraine without Starlink? As Starlink’s future in Ukraine hangs in the balance, could Europe’s Eutelsat step into the spotlight? France’s Eutelstat is in talks to replace Musk’s Starlink in Ukraine as the US pulls back from its security commitments and the Trump administration might use Starlink access as a lever in talks with Kyiv about its critical minerals. Eutelsat has said it is talking to the EU about providing additional services to Ukraine. The company already supports government and institutional communications in Ukraine, and told Reuters that it can provide an alternative for certain government and defence applications. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy
