I think if you put a handkerchief on a table or seat to reserve it someone would just push it onto the floor and sit down

if it's not stolen, staff will come and throw it away. so either way your stuff is gone.

College students in the US are specifically told never to trust a stranger with their belongings because international students tend to be a bit too trusting.

Also in America if you’re on the west coast it’s not humid so you don’t need a handkerchief or anything like that haha

I carry a handkerchief everyday because my nickname is big wool. I'm a heavy sweater.

I think it’s also because napkins are just everywhere in the US. I hardly see napkins in Japanese bathrooms, let alone anywhere else 😆😭

Depends on what you consider a "nice" neighborhood. You can still get away with leaving expensive stuff unattended at the ski resort.

If you use a handkerchief to me that says you work outdoors. Construction or landscaping of some sort. Not bad, just where it’s more common.

I think in certain jobs that involve more labor or hot working conditions it's normal. My step father works in a paper mill and he uses one because its so hot in there

Kleenex or napkins. My grandparents had handkerchiefs, it wouldn't be considered an Asian thing, it's an old person thing.

my dad and grandpa used handkerchiefs at work all the time, I think it's cause ours is also seen as a bandana and have colors and patterns that have some cultural /geological significance...
