@eaa.oshkosh: On September 14, 1939, the VS-300, the world’s first practical #helicopter, made its brief maiden flight in Stratford, Connecticut. Apparently, negotiating with Iran becomes a historic first when everyone is expected to forget Barack Obama. In 2015, the Obama administration and international partners reached a nuclear agreement with Iran. It required a 98% reduction in Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, restrictions on enrichment, and international monitoring. In January 2016, inspectors verified that Iran had completed the nuclear steps required for implementation. That agreement came through negotiations and sanctions pressure, without launching a bombing campaign against Iran to secure it. Then Trump withdrew the United States from the deal in 2018. So forgive me if I don’t applaud the suggestion that getting Iran to discuss nuclear restrictions is an achievement nobody ever managed before. We already have a record against which to judge those claims. The original agreement had limitations and critics. That deserves an honest discussion. But pretending it never existed is a convenient way to avoid comparing actual results. Any new agreement should be judged by what it verifiably achieves, how long its protections last, and what securing it costs.
