This was one of the most beautiful moments of trust I’ve ever experienced with an animal. On the tour we learned about the inhumane ways elephants are treated at tourist attractions like elephant bathing & riding. They were all rescued from these places but it takes a long time to overcome the trauma that they were trained into submission with. Their handlers would physically punish them for making any noises because they thought it would scare the customers who were bathing or riding them. They also didn’t want them communicating with one another to discourage them from rebelling. They used things like bull hooks and sticks to poke them when customers weren’t looking. One of the elephants was rescued after 30 years of giving 40 rides a day. This day at the sanctuary, we were observing them all morning watching them roam & go about their day. They were completely mute. And after the guides explained why, it broke my heart. So when we started hearing their little rumbles we were all so grateful and excited. Then the full volume trumpeting had me in shambles 🥹 One of the caregivers at the rescue sanctuary had been working with elephants for decades. Some places I’m sure he’s more proud of than others. But he said that for the first time in his life the elephant wasn’t working for him, he was working for the elephant. And I 😭 my shaylaaaaa Please do research on the companies you experience animals with and the ones to stay away from 🙏🏾 it’s not only better for the animal, but you’ll get to be a part of so many more beautiful moments that come from their happiness. Thank you @hiddenforestelephantreserve #travel #thailand #elephants #nature #explore #wholesome
