@ironbones: I love deep dives into incredibly niche subcultures and 1980s Hong Kong Wedding Photography has been an interest of mine for a while now. It feels so much more authentic than the overly posed, editorial style photos in American weddings today. There’s something pure about just taking photos in front of a street vendor or at a plastic table eating noodles, and I’m sure an American couple could absolutely crush this too. #wedding #weddingphoto
Some of your “80s” examples are modern day. Look at the labels of things.

You said "in the 80s" but they never stopped that in China and Japan. My friends' pre-wedding shoot from the early 2000s was the cutest thing ever. My brother's shoot from 6 years ago was so sweet.

You probably know Wong Kar Wai - but if not, his work is probably right down your alley!

I wonder if these inspired Wong Kar Wai? I immediately thought of the lighting and cinematography I associate with his work.

With their noise and neon lights, these photos often resembled the style of Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai. Stunning.

I will say, eating noodles in that dress before the wedding day is a bold choice. I can’t even keep my regular shirts clean when I eat noodles.

It makes it feel like they’re not just excited about a party which is ultimately what a wedding is. They’re excited about life together. Its so romantic.

I believe the couple & photographer (noodle picture) who first started the trend are from Vietnam and they were indeed inspired by 90s Hong Kong media ☺️. I saw another couple who did Hong Kong-style photo shoots in San Francisco.

Love these! I think a slight version of this would be the courthouse wedding photos. I've seen really cute photos of couples on the subway on their way to the courthouse.

The “original" vending machine picture is not from the 80s. It’s from 2008 the earliest based on the Pepsi logo.
