I have been married for eight years, and my husband has two younger brothers and a younger sister who were still depending on him for financial support. He was doing his best, but his income was not enough to meet all their needs. Since I earned more than him, I decided to help. At first, it was just small things. I would send money for food when necessary or help with whatever emergency came up. But as the years went by, the responsibility became bigger. Sometimes, I had to pay their entire school fees because my husband couldn't afford to contribute anything at the time. Whenever I complained that things were becoming too much, my husband would promise to refund some of the money as soon as he could. But most times, he wouldn't, and I would choose to let it go because he also had other financial responsibilities at home, including taking care of our children. My husband never forced me to help. I made the decision myself. Then, a few weeks ago, he told me he wanted to take me somewhere. When we arrived, I saw a beautiful three-bedroom bungalow. The building was completed, the exterior was well finished, and everything looked lovely. I was admiring the house, thinking my husband wanted us to rent it as our new apartnent until he turned to me and said, “This is the house I built for my parents.” For a moment, I couldn't even respond. I asked him when he started the project, and he told me he had been saving towards it for years. He explained that he wanted to surprise his parents and give them a comfortable home. I looked at him, trying to understand what he was saying. For five years, I had been using almost 50% of my salary to support his siblings. I had paid their school fees, sent money for food, and even his parents. And all that time, my husband had been secretly saving money to build a house for his parents without telling me. What hurt me was that he could make such a major financial decision in secret. Suddenly, I began to understand why he often didn't have enough money to contribute towards all his financial responsibilities. I turned to him and asked, “So, while I was struggling to support your family as well as our own family, you were secretly saving money to build this house? You didn't think I deserved to know?” He immediately started apologising. He tried to make me understand his reason which is because his parents were still living in a rented face-me-and-slap-you apartment, while my own parents already had a house of their own and were enjoying their old age. He said he wanted his parents to enjoy that kind of comfort too. He didn't want them to keep living in a rented apartment. I understood his point, but I was still hurt. When it came to something as significant as building a house, I had been completely left out of the decision. My husband kept insisting that I should be happy for him. He said he had worked hard to achieve something meaningful for his parents and that I shouldn't turn his achievement into an argument. That was when I realised that we were not even arguing about the same thing. He believed I was angry because he had achieved something without me. But I was angry because I had trusted him enough to make sacrifices for his family, while he had not trusted me enough to discuss his own plans with me. Since that day, things have not been the same between us. I keep asking myself whether I was wrong to expect him to discuss such a major decision with me. I don't want to be the wife who prevents her husband from taking care of his parents. But I also don't want to feel like an outsider in the life we are supposed to be building together. So I want to ask: Am I wrong for feeling betrayed by my husband's decision to secretly build a house for his parents while I was using almost 50% of my salary to support his siblings? Or should I accept that he had every right to use his money to build a house for his parents without discussing it with me? #RealStories #ReadMe #FYP #Story ….#creatorsearchinsights
