no actually they skip like any rf. in late 80s we got pictures of the tv station in elpaso tx midday news & we were in rural alabama with a large radio shack antenna

frequency also matters. low frequency say below 1600khz will bounce off the ionosphere. higher frequency say 400mhz travel in straight lines and the signal doesn't bounce back to earth

I was around 10 maybe 12 when I got my first color TV. My dad used to put a high antenna on the roof for better reception and we had to twist the rabbit ears perfectly for a better picture. UHF andVHF
