In the late 80s Chuck close did paintings with his thumbprint. They look like early digital photographs. But probably because it was about a decade before early digital photos, they weren’t popular.

If you look at other surrealism paintings from even earlier they get that uncanniness in the shadows and textures as well. that being said, he absolutely could have nudged it a bit further. 1/2
