I usually dump the water in the toilet so I don’t have to disnfect the kitchen sink. I wish I had a utility sink though!

Dirt could be built up under the carpet. The carpet itself may be clean and you’re pulling up old dirt that has accumulated underneath. Just a possibility.

put the carpet shampoo in a garden sprayer and pre spray the carpets, let sit for like 20 minutes then use the shampooer with just water you won't have the soapy residue in the shampooer left

you should use hot water and a little vinegar to rinse the carpets cause the soap build up is probably what your seeing in those last few dumps. I recently learned this and it's a game changer.

no no no, laundry soap is WAY more concentrated. soap residue will be left behind and your carpets will get dirty 10x faster. remember soap attracts dirt

I would vacuum before steam cleaning then vacuum as much as you can. The steam cleaner breaks up dirt and brings it up and the vacuum will suck it up once dry.

Talk to your landlord and see if it's possible to get new carpets. I understand that tho. it would cost us 100$ more in rent to get the carpet replaced
