“For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” - Genesis 3:19 These words come from the Book of Genesis and allude to Adam and Eve being made from dust and being reminded by God of their mortality. This life is so incredibly short, and it is our duty to make the most of this life while making our lives glorifying to God. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days leading up to Easter. (There are 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter, but Sundays are not included because you’re not expected to abstain on Sundays). The purpose of Lent is spiritual renewal and preparation for the resurrection of Jesus on Easter. The 40 days of Lent are a time of getting closer to God through purification, through cleansing the mind and body. You may have heard people ask the question, “What are you giving up for Lent?” Or you may have even been the one asking the question. You’re supposed to give up something during Lent as a sacrifice to God. The sacrifice serves as a daily reminder of God and frees up time and/or energy for God. But what is often forgotten or less well-understood is that Lent isn’t just about giving up something “because it’s hard”. It’s about giving up something so that God can fill the void it leaves. This is where the idea comes from that you can give up something OR do more of something good during Lent. Doing MORE of something inherently means doing LESS of something else to allocate more time to the MORE thing. For example, for Lent this year, I’m going through a daily devotional called “Set Free: Overcome the Seven Deadly Sins”. This will require an additional 10-15 minutes of my time every day, in addition to the Bible in a Year (BIY) and Catechism in a Year (CIY) that I’m already going through! To do so, I have to MAKE time for that devotional by spending LESS time either on social media, watching YouTube, or letting my mind mindlessly wander. Whatever the case, I’m directly devoting more time daily to Christ in preparation for the resurrection. If you feel called to do so, I challenge you to join me in devoting at least 10 minutes per day to God during Lent through BIY, CIY, or the daily devotional! #catholic #catholicism #catholictiktok #lent #christian #christiantiktok #catholicman #bible #catechism
