Instead of clear cutting and replanting, these forests are managed. "Canadian researchers and companies first began thinning young spruce stands in the late 1960's. They concluded the treatment delayed self-thinning by multiple decades and trees reached merchantable diameter 20 years sooner. Since then, this practice has been widely adopted and researched." . Benefits include increased biodiversity of insect and plant life, improved health and vigor of trees, increased species diversity. All of this provides habitat for Lynx, Moose, deer and other. .
