The Unfortunate Tale of a Fan's Broken Phone: When Repairs Fail and Lessons Are Learned In the world of tech repairs, not every story has a happy ending. Recently, a fan reached out to me with a phone he had purchased just a few months prior on installment payments. He was disheartened because the price of the phone had plummeted from over 6,000 yuan to less than 4,000 yuan, effectively wiping out his down payment. To add to his woes, the phone suffered a severe fall, leaving it damaged. He had already sought help from other technicians, but none could fix it. With hope dwindling, he turned to me for a final attempt at revival. This particular smartphone was a marvel in terms of design and camera capabilities, aiming to challenge industry giants like iPhone and Samsung. However, its Achilles' heel was the unstable Qualcomm 888 processor, which contributed to its drastic price drop. Determined to help, I began dismantling the phone to assess the damage. Upon inspection, I noticed that the shield covering the CPU was removed, and the Qualcomm processor had been re-balled and reinstalled - a clear sign of previous repair attempts. The current reading stuck at 200mA when I powered it on, indicating potential issues with the hard drive or RAM. Under the microscope, I found a stray solder bead near the charging IC, possibly caused during the prior CPU installation. After removing the charging IC and retesting, the problem persisted. Suspecting faulty soldering, I decided to revisit the CPU installation. Indeed, some pins adjacent to the hard drive weren't fully soldered. I meticulously cleaned and re-balled both the CPU and RAM, hopeful that this would resolve the issue. Yet, the fault remained. Turning my attention to the hard drive, I removed and examined it but found no visible issues. To be thorough, I cleaned off the adhesive, re-balled it, and tested it using a computer connection. Unfortunately, red error messages indicated that the hard drive partitions were damaged. It became clear that the hard drive itself was faulty. In the end, the motherboard was beyond repair, and the screen was also broken. The phone was officially a lost cause. The fan was left with a broken phone and an ongoing loan to repay - a harsh lesson in the risks of high-cost purchases on installment plans. This experience underscores the importance of spending within one's means and the unpredictable nature of technology repairs.
