At the start of the industrial period, public health was incredibly poor due to a combination of rapid urbanisation, poor living conditions, and limited understanding of disease. Several key factors contributed to the poor state of public health: The Industrial Revolution led to massive migration from rural areas to cities as people sought work in factories. This rapid growth in urban populations resulted in overcrowded living conditions. Many people lived in poorly constructed back-to-back housing with little ventilation, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to clean water. Industrial cities also lacked proper sewage systems. Waste was often dumped into rivers or left in the streets, leading to contamination of water supplies. The lack of proper sanitation contributed to the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. During this period, medical knowledge was still quite rudimentary. The germ theory of disease, which would later inform hygiene practices, was not widely accepted until the late 19th century. Many people believed diseases were caused by "miasma" or bad air, rather than microorganisms. People also believed in spontaneous generation theory. As a result, public health measures such as vaccination, anti-septics and sewage systems were not yet in place. Governments and local authorities did not yet recognize the importance of investing in public health infrastructure. There were no formal health regulations or agencies to address sanitation, disease control, or food safety, leaving cities vulnerable to epidemics. This was made worse by the fact that the government still held laissez-faire beliefs. Many industrial workers lived in poverty, which meant poor nutrition and limited access to healthcare. Malnutrition weakened the immune system, making people more susceptible to diseases. The working class often faced long hours in unsafe conditions, which made their overall health problems even worse. #publichealth #industrial #revolution #healthandthepeople #historytok #HistoryTime #historytiktok #MemeCut #MemeCut #Meme #MemeCut
