I should have clarified that my post, besides facts, also focused on myths/rumors that are widely associated with The Wizard of Oz. My bad. While some details may have been exaggerated, remain unverified, or are debated due to conflicting accounts they are still part of the movie’s legacy. For instance, the rumors about the munchkins allegedly harassing Judy are why I labeled them as allegedly (since these claims were still circulating)..The urban legend of the “hanging munchkin” is another example which, yes, I know has been debunked (why else would I call it an urban legend? 😭) is still one of those enduring myths that has become intertwined with the film’s reputation. Also yes, not all munchkin actors came from N@zi Germany (which is why I said “SOME”), but it’s still reasonable to think that a few could have been. Many (not all) of the munchkins were reportedly from Europe, and after H!tler rose to power and became Chancellor (the highest political position in Germany) in 1933, many people who didn’t fit his ideal of the “Aryan” image fled the country. Its really not that hard to grasp Judy’s diet. Yes, her mother put her on a strict diet before The Wizard of Oz, but she also had to endure it WHILE working on the movie. Not only did the production and studio enabled that diet they made it worse to the point were their treatment contributed to her lifelong struggles with addiction and mental health. As for the snow in the poppy field scene, yes there’s a debate about whether it was gypsum or asbestos. While gypsum (which can still cause health risks in certain conditions, such as when dust is inhaled in large amounts for example being rained on with it as snow) was used in early Hollywood films, the widely spread belief on the other hand,is that it was chrysotile asbestos. This material was commonly used for fake snow due to its fire-resistant properties at the time.People back then didn’t KNOW asbestos was toxic. However what’s not exaggerated and NOT up for debate, is how poorly the cast was treated by producers. Some of y’all really seem to forget that this movie was made in the 1930s Hollywood. The industry was harsh, exploitative, and treated actors like commodities. Health and well-being was not a priority. The only focus was on pumping out successful movies. #wizardofoz #wicked #judygarland #oz #fyp #recommendations
