@hayleyrawle: DISCLAIMER: I want to be clear that my issue is with the Mormon church itself, not with individual people. I’m genuinely happy for those whose experiences in the church transcended its patriarchal messaging, and I really hope that happens more for future generations. But I think it’s important to recognize the difference between personal experience and what the church actually teaches. Doing so stops the church from looking more progressive than it really is and validates the experiences of people who’ve been hurt by its rigid gender roles. It also puts the historical impact of these teachings into perspective. I had a friend who left the church before I did, and one of her main reasons was the gender roles and lack of power for women. I remember saying to her, “Well, I’ve never felt disempowered as a woman in the church!” And she responded “But what about all the women who have?” That really stuck with me. I eventually realized that even if I didn’t feel disempowered personally (which, looking back, I definitely was), I was still supporting an institution that harmed a lot of women. I keep wanting to apologize for being so passionate or for not being more careful with my words, but honestly, this stuff runs deep. And after hearing hundreds, if not thousands, of women’s stories about how these gender roles and hierarchy have negatively impacted them, I know this really matters. Oh and the “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” conversation I’m referring happened on the @The Viall Files podcast episode E807- Going Deeper w/The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives #secretlivesofmormonwives #slomw #viallfiles #momtok #mormon #lds #postmormon

As a non Mormon I find the “it’s sacred not secret” phrase so alarming. I can imagine when you are in the trenches of Mormon you’re made to feel like that makes sense, but on the outside it’s wild

I’m so so happy for people whose parents taught them differently… but that quite literally doesn’t change doctrine 🫣

I think most households in the church share the responsibility of providing for the family and raising the kids. I don’t see how you can afford a house on 1 income.

also what if your husband is an AH? this only works if you have a kind and loving husband otherwise he will use it as a power trip.

This was so apparent to me during Covid. Women who had spent their whole lives in the church told to pray about the sacrament as an alternative to partaking because they couldn’t bless it themselves.

I have talked to a lot of faithful members who block out or disassociate a lot of this information in an attempt to remain in the church and then claim they were never taught that same info

I didn’t have any men in my life growing up that I was close enough with ever ask for anything to do with the priesthood so I agree with you 100% it’s not as accessible to all women as they allude

💯🔥💕love this episode!!! When my first born turned 12 and I learned as a convert he had more power in church than me, that was a huge red flag that started our families exit to real JOY!

🙌 I was raised by a single mom who worked full time as a nurse. She defied so many gender roles, but I still internalized gender roles because of the church.

no because my high school boyfriends mom convinced me that they believe that both genders are equal because they have "equally important roles" I ended up being Mormon for 2-3 years and left in colleg

It’s not just the LDS faith. Bibical women were never in leadership positions and their roles were to take care of the children. Look into other faiths. It’s not just the LDS faith.
