@kevinjdebruin: EUROPA FILES E13 Europa was discovered over 400 years ago in the year 1610 by Galileo Galilei. It is the smallest of the four Galilean moons. It is about the size of our moon, but is believed to have at least twice as much water as all of Earth. How? On average Earth’s oceans are 4-km deep with the deepest point being 11-km known as the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. Europa’s oceans are estimated to be 100-km deep on average. This ocean is below an icy crust which is estimated to be about 30-km thick. So we have an icy shell with a deep global ocean underneath, then a rocky interior, and an iron-metallic core. This is our best hypothesis and Europa Clipper is going to be confirming our suspicions. #europa #europaclipper #europafiles #europaicebath #europaphile
i didn't know these things about water on Europa. i wonder what it's like where the water meets the rocky center of the planet, like the floor of Europa's oceans
