Jamaica’s economy and wealth have historically been shaped by colonialism, and to some extent, the control of wealth by non-Black individuals or foreign entities remains a legacy of that history. Jamaica was a British colony from 1655 until it gained independence in 1962, during which time the island’s economy was centered on plantation agriculture, particularly sugar. These plantations were largely owned by British or European settlers, and the labor force was made up of enslaved Africans. Even after the abolition of slavery and Jamaica’s independence, the concentration of economic power remained largely in the hands of foreign or non-Black elites, often tied to multinational corporations or descendants of colonial settlers. Key industries like banking, tourism, and mining (bauxite) have long been dominated by non-Jamaican entities, with wealth often flowing out of the country, rather than benefiting the local, predominantly Black population. While there are successful Black entrepreneurs and locally owned businesses in Jamaica, the structural inequalities stemming from colonialism have meant that economic power has often been disproportionately held by non-Black individuals or foreign entities. There have been efforts to address this imbalance, but the effects of centuries of economic exclusion are still felt today.
