L U G H N A S A D H 🌾 We are now slowly entering the dark half of the year, the sun is setting slightly earlier, the fruits are ripening on the trees, and although there is still warmth to the sun, there is a taste of autumn in the air. Lughnasadh is an ancient Irish festival which marks the first cutting of the grain and celebrates the sun god, Lugh. Traditionally it is a time when communities will gather for feasts, bonfires, games, and great celebrations to give thanks to the sun and all that it has done to ensure the harvest grows. An old Irish legend tells of Lughs origin, from being raised by his foster mother Tailteann , who died clearing the fields of Ireland so that its inhabitants may plant wheat, corn and barley. In her honour, Lugh created the Tailteann games, which were celebrated around the 1st of August and are still celebrated in Ireland today, making up a large part of Lughnasadh traditions. The harvest festivals were highly important to our ancestors, as they would determine how much food they had to survive the winter. Offerings of bread, biscuits, wreaths of wheat, and corn are usually made for the deities of the harvest to thank them for all they have done in helping the harvest to grow. Some will know this festival by its Anglo-Saxon counterpart, Lammas. As before they were Christians, the Anglo-Saxons believed in many pagan deities, including harvest gods. They celebrated the first cutting of the grain and would bake Lammas bread as part of their celebrations. It is strange to celebrate the start of the autumn festivals in late summer. However, that is the cycle of the seasons, and we must accept the next seasonal transition.
