@dw.science: NASA plans to build a base on the Moon. The first moon landing happened more than 50 years ago. Today, plans to return to the moon involve staying there permanently. The idea is to have astronauts live on a lunar base – a place for scientific research, a testbed for technological advancement and a training ground for staying on other planets for longer periods of time. It will be called the Artemis Lunar Base Camp. Ultimately, the moon is seen as humankind’s stopover on the way to Mars. But on the moon, it’s icy cold in some places and dark for up to 14 Earth days at a time. So what’s the best spot to put up a lunar base?
