@drgolly: Find the cause, alleviate it – and enjoy the extra sleep! Purple crying, like colic, is a describing term. Not a disease. The term was designed to minimise the very confronting topic of shaken-baby syndrome, for which there is a direct correlation with a highly unsettled baby. PURPLE is an acronym. It stands for: 🟣 Peak crying, 🟣 Unexpected, 🟣 Resistant to soothing, 🟣 Pain-filled face, 🟣 Long-lasting and occurring in the 🟣 Evening. It’s essentially just another way of saying colic, describing a period of highly unsettled behaviour from the first few weeks until around 4 months. Both are adjectives – and my concerns are they don’t provide helpful ways to actually alleviate a baby’s distress. While it’s true some babies can be particularly unsettled, in my experience the large majority can be treated with simple techniques. Most babies will grow out of it by the time they reach about four months, but four months of highly unsettled behaviour and crying is something too many families struggle through. I cover this in my sleep programs. Check them out at the link 💜 #drgolly #paediatrician #doctor #purplecrying #colic #unsettledbaby #newborn

Uhhhh if it’s colic why has my 3yo suddenly started doing this from a dead sleep, everynight, sometimes multiple times a night- he’ll scream inconsolable then stops and goes back to sleep

I asked everyone for help cause it looked so painful and distressful but his pediatrician didn’t have any ideas or anyone I spoke to. I cried with him as I held him close to my chest, rocking him

My son was super colicky. A schedule as best as possible. Baths and showers every night at the same time did me wonders. Whenever he was inconsolable, we took a shower.
