🎬✨ Barbenheimer: The Movie Event of 2023 ✨🎬 It's been a year since the social phenomenon known as Barbenheimer took over the world in 2023, marking the movie event of the year that got us all back into the cinemas. It was a unique cultural moment that spurred attempts at replication, like “Saw Patrol,” and efforts to avoid it, like “Exorswift.” And for me, it’s the perfect example of the Third Place Theory n action. Origins of Barbenheimer * The story begins back in 2021 when Warner Bros announced "Project Popcorn," a strategy to release all major films on HBO Max instead of in theaters. This decision was heavily criticized by director Christopher Nolan, who subsequently decided to leave Warner Bros and take Oppenheimer to Universal. * After Nolan set the release date, Warner Bros responded by swapping the release of a Looney Tunes movie with Barbie, setting up a direct showdown with Oppenheimer. Many saw this as a form of punishment towards Nolan for speaking out and leaving the studio. * The first use of the term “Barbenheimer” was by Matt Neglia, Editor-in-Chief of Next Best Picture. While he has since said he can't remember coining the term, it was his tweet in 2022 that sparked the flame. The Phenomenon of Barbenheimer * What started as a niche joke turned into a massive cultural moment, with audiences flooding cinemas in droves, many dressed up in themed costumes. According to the cinema chain Vue, nearly 1/5th of people who bought a ticket to see Barbie also bought a ticket for Oppenheimer. In the US, AMC reported over 40,000 double features booked, growing week by week. * The conversation quickly became about the viewing order—do you see the heavy devastation of Oppenheimer first and then lighten up with Barbie, or the other way around? I say, who cares? But for what it’s worth, I did Barbie first, then Oppenheimer. * It wasn’t just about seeing two films; it was about being part of the social conversation, which leads me to the Third Place Theory. Third Place Theory * The Third Space Theory suggests that previous generations had a very defined third space—a place to grow socially and emotionally outside of the home (first space) and work (second space). Traditional third spaces could be gyms, social clubs, bars, or sports venues. But with the underfunding of physical spaces, the internet has become the new third space for many. * Barbenheimer perfectly exemplified this. Many people weren’t necessarily interested in either Barbie or Oppenheimer, but they saw both to feel part of something larger. The phenomenon took over social media, with people sharing their experiences online, dressing up, and joining the conversation. It was a positive example of the internet as a third space, although we know it can have its dangers too. But here, the third space worked in a light-hearted, fun way. Impact on Cinema * Barbenheimer helped revitalize cinema in a post-pandemic world. It scored the fourth biggest weekend in American cinema history. Both films exceeded box office expectations, with Barbie grossing $1.4 billion and Oppenheimer earning $900 million, which is especially impressive given its R rating. * This led to some wild attempts at counterprogramming, like the infamous “Saw Patrol,” which encouraged audiences to watch Saw X and Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie on the same day. Universal even moved The Exorcist: Believer up a week to avoid competing with Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour film, dodging an “Exorswift” situation. * Other attempts to recreate the magic have included marketing stunts like “Garfuriosa” (Garfield vs. Furiosa: A Mad Max Story), and coming up this year, there’s “Glicked” (Wicked vs. Gladiator II). 🍿💣#JoesAlternativeHistory #ThirdPlaceTheory #ThirdPlaces #Community #OnlineCommunities #Sociology #BarbieMovie #Barbenheimer #CinemaRevival #AlternativeHistory #ThirdSpaceTheory #Oppenheimer #Barbie #MovieCulture
