@dw.science: NFC technology allows us to securely pay with just a tap of our cards or smartphones. The roots of this technology go back to World Wār II, when radio waves were first used to identify planes. Over time, this evolved into what we now call NFC—Near Field Communication. NFC only works over very short distances—just a few centimeters. Inside your contactless card, there’s an antenna and a chip that securely stores your payment data. While the process feels instantaneous, it involves creating a unique, encrypted code each time you tap, ensuring your card data remains safe. With smartphones, the process is similar, but instead of storing data directly on the phone, payment apps like Apple Pay or Google Pay use tokenization to generate a unique, temporary token that represents your card. Although NFC is secure, the technology is not entirely immune to risks like theft or fraud.
