When attempting to teach a puppy something like a recall, many owners make the mistake of using words and commands way too soon. To be clear, a recall is basically when a puppy or dog is away from the human, the human says something like Eyes-> Ears. Most owners, dog trainers, and vet behaviorists primarily focus on eyes and ears, unfortunately. It makes sense why this happens because, as humans, we are primarily eyes and ears. The nose is almost always disregarded in all the puppy training and dog training videos that people send me. In my humble opinion, the best way to teach a recall is through the nose in puppyhood. Here, you will see me waving scent in front of Raffles, one of our puppies in our Puppy Enrichment Program. By waving the scent, the nose, which controls a majority of brain function, picks up the scent and looks to see where the scent of food is coming from. Nose-> Eyes. Then I move away to cause the puppy to do the action of coming to me. As Raffles is coming to me, doing the action of a recall, I say, "Raffles come," to mark that action. Waiting for this moment to engage ears is most ideal! When he gets to me, I say "yes" (or whatever reward marker you want) and give the food to positively reinforce the behavior The more this happens, the more the puppy associates "Raffles come" with go to human to get reward. You can still do this with an adult dog if you missed doing this in puppyhood. As always, be patient and make the time to practice this! Remember, a dogs loyalty is earned in the nature world. It can't be bought. You earn it through putting in the time, being in the right energy, and putting the dogs' instinctual needs before your emotional needs. Have an amazing day!❤️" width="135" height="240">
