tips for working with pre-teens & teens as a pediatric nurse 🩺 ✨ treating with more maturity: they are at an age where they want to be more “mature.” Some/most don’t want to be babied and you can help them not feel like that by having them involved in their care (to the extent they’re able to) —asking them questions about their health/if they have any concerns with their plan of care that they’ll probably know instead of solely asking the parents —giving them options on how to optimize their stay independently and allowing them to have accountability. Examples: goal is getting up from the bed to the chair x3/day or walking around the unit, using the incentive spirometer x amount of times every hour, etc ✨ providing options for privacy: for example I’ll ask if they feel comfortable with parents/family in the room or if they prefer to not have anyone around for specific questions, whether they want the curtains closed or not etc. it is different if I have a situation where a patient needs a 1:1 sitter and I remind them of their role/why they’re here/the importance of it. ✨ giving them a schedule for how the shift will be: how often I’ll be doing vital signs and assessments, when meds will be due, if I need to do specific procedures with them, etc. that way it doesn’t feel like an invasion of privacy when I come in the room. I’ll also let them know if there’s a possibility if other teams are coming to see them and I’ll give a heads up when they’re about to enter. ✨ lastly is of course building a rapport with them, talking to them about their life (to the extent they wish to share), what their interests are and so on. 🏷️ #pediatricnurse #pedsnurse #newgradrn #newgradnurse #nursing #nurselife #nursetips #nurseblogger #nursingstudent #studentnurse #nursingschool #nursemotivation
