I think you’re too focused on the developer issue and it’s clouding your judgement of the realistic functionality and logistics of remote work on that scale.

Im in Ottawa and often think abt how great it would have been to have govt jobs available to rural and remote workers… but nooo we need them to prop up a failing transit system and downtown businesses

This is so true. Remote work could have injected $$ into small towns with limited economies, growing rural areas.

It would help with traffic issues in large cities, but I’m sure banning bike lanes will be more effective

I totally agree however I do think there is an incredibly important and community connecting aspect of work lost with remote. Remote work is deeply lonely for single people.

Most people I know are required to come into the office, but aren’t paid enough to live in the city their office is in 😭

In Canada, the pay is lower than US. Cost of living is skyrocketing. It would be so smart to try to attract talents with remote work or a 4 days/week. And get some relief in city's traffic

My first job in tech (2015, during uni) was a remote position. Zoom wasn’t even the main tool at that time. It worked then, and it works now. I do not understand why leaders can’t stand up for it.

We are so spread apart as a country, but the best talent is everywhere. I’ve seen this in recruitment. I started in NS and doubled my salary going remote to work from Montréal.

The irony of “leading the green transition” while simultaneously sticking us in traffic blows my mind.
