@mayximh: ‘Going nonverbal’ let’s talk about it, again 🫠 there are some blurred lines where some people can lose speech for months, years at a time. Or have different triggers/situations. I’m not an expert and cannot say everything ever that May fall under certain terms. But you do not, and never need, to be saying ‘going nonverbal’ for your momentary speech loss that is triggered by anxiety, dysregularion, meltdowns etc there IS more accurate terms for that. Say verbal shutdown, say selective mutism, say speech loss episode etc etc

Verbal shutdown feels odd. Nonverbal feels easier.. BUT I feel it's selective mutism, and I call mine shushy time :3

I have selective mutism (sounds way more controllable than it is) and thank you for educating me, I didn't know how harmful that wording can be

I have a kiddo who is non verbal and one with verbal shutdowns, I usually say "he goes non verbal" because it's what most people understand, and he's too young to tell me otherwise. but I will try to

I say going non verbal because selctive mutism is taken like I have a choice with not being able to talk, so personally I will keep using it.

due to my autism it is what i would say is nonverbal, as i physically cannot speak and my throat closes! i find people cannot understand what it means when i use nonspeaking as people believe it is-

As an autistic, I go non-verbal if I'm too overwhelmed, got yelled at, meltdown etc...and I had ppl tell me "answer me, you were just talking"

Oh i thought I could use that for my autism. I'm usually verbal but sometimes when I get overstimulated I can't speak and I used "going non-verbal". I suppose a "verbal shutdown" is more accurate then

I think the term ‘shutdown’ has really negative connotations. It makes people think of someone curled up on the floor with their hands over their ears. We say ‘quiet time’ which works but…

I honestly don't see a problem it explains the situation well and clearly. whoever say they switch it off and on I don't agree but it doesn't matter what it's called as long as everyone understands

the one problem I've found is when there's been pushback from describing my friends selective mutism them going "well then select not to, we need them to speak" for like doctors, it's infuriating.

i explain it as i am an autistic person who is semi-verbal because that’s how it was explained to me. in a lot of situations i am physically unable to talk, and it becomes painful.

im verbalflux, sometimes i am "nonverbal" aka even hand or head gestures arent an option, but im trying to find better terms besides "verbal shutdown/loss" because that feels inaccurate

So what’s it called when you just cannot speak at all for like 3-4+hours at worst but no overstimulation or overwhelm. I can speak normally but i can go nonverbal. Ive had it since I was a baby.

I experience both selective mutism and verbal shutdown but we have two alters who are completely nonverbal. They never speak and can't although one can make noises like grunts
