Over the course of my career, I’ve been given many pieces of feedback. Most of it was helpful and valid, but other suggestions or comments just felt wrong: I’ve been told I was doing too much for my clients I’ve been told I wasn’t good at building rapport with team members I’ve even been told not to smile in my company headshot to appear more “professional” I’m not anti-feedback. The right insight into how you’re preparing certain deliverables, or approaching certain tasks can be a huge unlock at work. But what I had to learn the hard way is that oftentimes, someone's personal perspective or limitations on how they see themselves or you as a professional will alter the lens through which they see you and provide you with feedback. Authority doesn’t always come with accuracy. And if you’re confident in how you’re showing up to work and serving your team and clients, you shouldn’t feel the need to compromise who you are to fit into someone else’s idea of who you should be. Sometimes, it’s a signal that you may not be where you’re meant to be in the first place.
