A fan sent us this U.S. version Fold4 with significant issues: the inner screen was leaking, the outer screen was cracked, and the frame had dents and scratches at a Star Wars battle-damage level. We begin by carefully disassembling the device. After applying solvent around the edges, we remove the small screen and protect the front camera with stickers. Interestingly, heating the phone caused the hinge to malfunction - it couldn't straighten out due to previous overheating, which had softened the dust strips and jammed the hinge. This serves as a crucial reminder: never leave foldable phones in hot environments like cars or under direct sunlight, especially during summer. As we proceed, we encounter multiple challenges. The back cover shatters during removal because excessive glue was applied previously. Internal components like the plastic covers over the charging port and motherboard are broken, suggesting that the phone might have been improperly repaired before. We disconnect all flex cables, remove the motherboard and sub-board, and plan to modify it for dual-SIM functionality by shorting specific points on the motherboard. The main screen is beyond repair due to complete liquid leakage and delamination, so we replace it entirely.
