@nytimes: The Major League Baseball team the Athletics played their final games this week in the Oakland Coliseum, which has been their home base in California for the past half-century. They’re expected to relocate to Las Vegas for 2028 at the whim of their billionaire owner, John Fisher, and in the meantime play in a minor-league ballpark in Sacramento. Our reporter Jack Nicas explains how the plan to build a stadium in Las Vegas is driven by a single factor — money — and what it has meant to Oakland. Video by Jack Nicas, Farah Otero-Amad, Rebecca Suner, Laura Salaberry, and David Seekamp/The New York Times. #MLB #baseball #athletics #oakland

This whole concept of moving a team just wouldn’t wash in the UK. It was done once years ago and it’s still seen as sporting blasphemy. The fans are the heartbeat of sport.

This is a flawed analysis. Oakland gave Fisher what he asked for, until he kept moving the goalposts too far. Vegas is giving him peanuts compared to what Oakland was going to have to pay.

For someone in the UK this is wild. Wimbledon moving to Milton Keynes was 20 years ago and it's still a sore spot for all footballs fans.

Saying that Fisher tried to stay in Oakland is disingenuous. Those proposals never had legitimate financial plans the same way the move to LV doesn’t have a financial plan

So the Athletics are moving again. While I think taxes paying for stadiums isn’t right it’s Oakland’s fault. Just like the rest of us lose teams Las Vegas deserves teams & can afford it.

I think for small market teams it makes some sense to implement a 50+1 rule. The communities could opt in, similar to what the Packers have, but with the possibility of investor money.
