I've heard A LOT of different methods on how to stop a dog fight, and some of them cause me to question whether the person advising what to do has actually broken up a serious fight.⁣ ⁣ I'm not saying the woman giving the suggestion has never broken up a serious dog fight.⁣ ⁣ I'm saying that many of the suggested methods I hear could work sometimes but likely won't always work.⁣ ⁣ Wheelbarrowing is something that could work but will likely not work with serious dogs.⁣ ⁣ I've heard of the dump water on them, use an air horn, scream, hit the dog, and the infamous, "stick your finger up their butt."⁣ ⁣ There are actually trainers who suggest the finger up the butt to be the best method, which I, respectfully, disagree as the best approach to breaking up a fight.⁣ ⁣ Restricting airflow/bloodflow is the only way to get a serious dog who is latched onto another dog to stop.⁣ ⁣ Years ago, I was in the middle of a training session with a client when I heard a dog fight break out at the dog park.⁣ ⁣ When I looked, I saw a mixed power breed dog latched onto a Golden Retriever.⁣ ⁣ People were panicked, screaming, hitting the dog (only intensifying his bite), trying to wheelbarrow, and overall escalating the fight even though the intention was to stop the fight.⁣ ⁣ Having rehabilitated serious dogs, I knew the only way to stop the aggressor dog.⁣ ⁣ I calmly but confidently walked into the dog park, told everyone to relax, grabbed the aggressor dogs collar, twisted until the moment he let go, and put a leash on the aggressor.⁣ ⁣ All while the Golden Retrievers "force free" trainer was standing right outside the park and did nothing.⁣ ⁣ That's another story😂⁣ ⁣ In my humble opinion, restricting bloodflow/airflow temporarily is the most optimal way to stop a serious dog.⁣ ⁣ We never want to choke a dog, but when another dogs life is on the line, we must take action. ⁣ ⁣ The energy you do this action is critically important.⁣ ⁣ You must be calm and confident when attempting to stop a serious fight.⁣ ⁣ As always, the best way to stop a fight is to prevent it by being a great leader/parent-figure for your dog!
