- In a few months, Iranians will vote for a new Assembly of Experts, the body that will decide who will replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 84, as the most powerful political and religious authority in the Islamic Republic. “The race for replacing Khamenei has already begun and is very heated, and whatever you’ve seen in Iran in the past two years must be analysed in the context of the fight over the chair of Khamenei,” a former conservative official told Middle East Eye. This assembly is composed of 88 qualified Islamic jurists and clerics responsible for appointing, supervising and dismissing the supreme leader. According to media reports, 510 people have registered their names for the election, which takes place every 8 years and will next be held on 1 March 2024. Among the candidates running are former reformist president, Hassan Rouhani, and current principlist President Ebrahim Raisi. Following significant victories in Khartoum, Darfur and parts of Kordofan, the RSF has now entered areas that have been held soundly by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since war broke out in April, areas holding hundreds of thousands of Sudanese displaced by the fighting. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said on Saturday that a Christian mother and daughter were fatally shot by an Israeli soldier on the grounds of the Gaza Strip's only Catholic church. "Around noon [1000 GMT] today... a sniper of the IDF [Israeli army] murdered two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish in Gaza" where Christian families have been sheltering since the war broke out, the patriarchate said in a statement.
