- In a few months, Iranians will vote for a new Assembly of Experts, the body that will decide who will replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 84, as the most powerful political and religious authority in the Islamic Republic. “The race for replacing Khamenei has already begun and is very heated, and whatever you’ve seen in Iran in the past two years must be analysed in the context of the fight over the chair of Khamenei,” a former conservative official told Middle East Eye. This assembly is composed of 88 qualified Islamic jurists and clerics responsible for appointing, supervising and dismissing the supreme leader. According to media reports, 510 people have registered their names for the election, which takes place every 8 years and will next be held on 1 March 2024. Among the candidates running are former reformist president, Hassan Rouhani, and current principlist President Ebrahim Raisi. With the current chairman of the assembly not running in the race, likely contenders include Raisi; Tehran’s Friday prayer leader Ahmad Khatami; the senior seminary official Ahmad Araafi; and the Qom Friday prayer leader Hashem Hosseinni Bushehri. As for Rouhani, it is not clear whether he will be allowed to run in the election. Many officials believe Rouhani could likely be disqualified from running, as happened briefly in 2017. A more realistic choice for the next supreme leader would be the son of Khamenei himself, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has been very active in behind-the-scenes politics in Iran and has always been mentioned as the likely final candidate. - The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has attacked el-Gezira state, pushing into central Sudan for the first time and opening a new front in the Sudanese conflict. Following significant victories in Khartoum, Darfur and parts of Kordofan, the RSF has now entered areas that have been held soundly by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since war broke out in April, areas holding hundreds of thousands of Sudanese displaced by the fighting. RSF fighters are also reportedly massing outside el-Fasher, North Darfur’s state capital, and Babanosa city in West Kordofan state. Witnesses told Middle East Eye that intense clashes and air strikes are ongoing in el-Gezira, where almost 6 million people live, 500,000 of whom were displaced by fighting in Khartoum. The state is Sudan’s breadbasket, so the attack places greater strain on Sudan’s food security. Along the road linking Khartoum and el-Gezira, villagers are fleeing from place to place as Sudanese troops exchange fire with paramilitary fighters. “Hundreds of vehicles and thousands of fighters entered our village,” one resident told MEE by phone,, “intimidating the people with intensive firing in the air, which wounded several civilians,” “The bodies of soldiers from both sides are scattered all over the place,” says another witness. Both sides claim to be in control of the situation yet fighting is ongoing, forcing the UN to suspend its field missions. - Pope Francis on Sunday deplored the death of two women in a Catholic parish in Gaza, where he said

Both sides claim to be in control of the situation yet fighting is ongoing, forcing the UN to suspend its field missions. - Pope Francis on Sunday deplored the death of two women in a Catholic parish in Gaza, where he said "defenceless civilians" were targeted by shootings and bombings. "I continue to receive very serious and painful news from Gaza," he said at the end of the Angelus prayer. "A mother and her daughter... were killed and other people injured by sniper fire." "This happened even inside the parish of the Holy Family where there are no terrorists, but families, children, sick or disabled people," the pope stressed. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said on Saturday that a Christian mother and daughter were fatally shot by an Israeli soldier on the grounds of the Gaza Strip's only Catholic church. "Around noon [1000 GMT] today... a sniper of the IDF [Israeli army] murdered two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish in Gaza" where Christian families have been sheltering since the war broke out, the patriarchate said in a statement.
