![Noel Francisco, attorney for TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, urged justices Friday to strike down or issue an injunction against a law that could see the popular social media app banned in the U.S. by Jan. 19. The law, which Congress with bipartisan majorities last April as part of a foreign aid package, seeks to force the sale of TikTok by its Chinese parent company, arguing its ownership presents a national security threat through content manipulation and data collection on Americans. Mr. Francisco, who served as U.S. solicitor general in the first Trump administration, argued that a sale was not feasible and that the law ran afoul of the First Amendment’s free speech protections. “Whether you call [the law] a ban or a divestiture, one thing is clear: It’s a burden on TikTok’s speech, so the First Amendment applies,” he told justices.
