@emileesegura: let this be your sign to KEEP FIGHTING! this week I was absolutely emotionally drained working for 4 days to get an in person ASL interpreter for the prenatal class I registered for. Eventually all my hard work paid off! The office kept insisting that VRI (video remote interpreter) was going to be effective but I felt it wasn’t going to be. I was stressed about the connectivity, watching an interpreter through a screen for 5.5 hours, the interpreters not being able to hear the other parents asking questions, the interpreters not being able to see the props, visual demonstrations, PowerPoint, etc. I expressed my concerns but felt that they weren’t listening. They told me that if I didn’t want the VRI they could give me a full refund. But I didn’t want a refund. I wanted to be able to equally access this community resource! After 4 days of fighting, I eventually agreed to try the VRI the next day and if it wasn’t effective I would ask for a full refund. Later that evening, I got a call from the director of operations. Apparently my persistence paid off as it was brought to the CEOs awareness and they finally realized what they needed to do. They found an interpreter the night before. The system needs to change. It needs to be easier to get ASL interpreters so that deaf people can access resources in their community! Please share this to spread awareness! #deaf #deafawarenessmonth #deafawareness #deafmom #deafcommunity #deafawareness #deafculture #deafworld #deafbaby #hardofhearing #asl #americansignlanguage #cochlearimplant #nucleus7 #n7 #audiology #earlyintervention

I know it’s exhausting advocating for yourself. I’m glad your hardwork paid off. I’m glad the office was made aware of your concerns so they could be addressed. ❤️❤️

Keep fighting. I’ve gotten wheelchair ramps installed at businesses and accessible playground equipment at school for my daughter. They were hard fights but it was worth it

It can be VERY frustrating when they think they know everything and that it’d be “good enough” when you KNOW yourself better

In tears as a HOH SLP grad student. Why is it easier to advocate for others but self advocacy is so draining? Thank you for being vulnerable and showing this side of you- I feel so seen right now ❤️

I know it isn’t ideal, but sometimes, going to class with the VRI and showing them why it doesn’t work is effective, disrupting the class, making a scene, will help them remember for the next person.

I have been through this countless times and it is extremely frustrating and draining. I am sorry this continues as the law for access and reasonable accommodations has been in place since 1990.

I'm so happy for you finally getting what you need. I had to ask a friend from Houston drive 8 hours round trip in one day to interpret for me last night. It's so difficult!
