Most cells are either working, waiting, or causing damage. The difference matters more than most people realize. In this conversation, Dr. Darcie Moore breaks down two states that sound similar but couldn't be more different: quiescence and senescence. Quiescent cells are resting. They're out of the cell cycle, not dividing, but ready. As Dr. Moore describes it, they're sitting on the bench, listening for a signal. And when that signal comes, they pull everything inward and get to work. Senescent cells are something else entirely. They're also out of the cell cycle. Also not dividing. But this isn't rest, it's damage. They can't reenter. They've lost the ability to do their job. And instead of staying quiet, they start releasing things that are toxic to everything around them. There's a reason researchers call them zombie cells. Understanding the difference between a cell that's waiting and a cell that's gone rogue is one of the more important distinctions in how we think about aging and long-term health.
