@kevinjdebruin: EUROPA FILES E20 Since we think Europa may be able to support alien life, we do not want to contaminate it with Earth life. There is something called Planetary Protection, which is two sided. One side is to protect Earth from potential “space bugs” or hazards. This is why the Apollo 11 astronauts were quarantined when they landed back on Earth and why Mars Sample Return is such a challenge. The other side is not accidentally putting any “earth bugs” out in space where there could be alien life, like Europa. We don’t want to find life somewhere and have it accidentally be the life we brought with us. So Europa Clipper is going through many cleaning and sanitizing processes to eliminate the Earth bugs in everything from manufacturing to assembly. #europa #europaclipper #europafiles #europaicebath #europaphile
