As an HR person, I agree 💯. Most employers do not give references. Just your title and dates of employment are shared, not the reason you left.

I wish there were a TikTok on how to prepare yourself mentally to be fired. I say do what you can mentally handle. No matter the reason being fired CAN be very taxing.

From a UI perspective, we pay as many people who quit as get fired. Tips: make and document efforts to change departments/supervisors, but don’t wait more than a couple months to leave
