One-shot • • Karina and Winter had already been rivals back in high school. Both with completely different personalities. Nobody remembered exactly when the world ended. Only that it happened way too fast. One day the streets were crowded and full of life. The next, the roads were empty, buildings abandoned, and infected people filling up the city. Survival became the only thing that mattered. Karina and Winter ended up in the same survivor group by accident. And from the very beginning, they couldn’t stand each other. Karina believed in structure. Schedules. Careful planning. Winter ignored every single rule. She disappeared on supply runs without saying anything, came back bruised half the time, and somehow still acted like nothing could touch her. Every argument between them sounded exactly the same. “You’re going to get yourself killed one day.” Winter would sling her backpack onto the table lazily before shrugging. “Like you'd even care.” Then she’d let out a tired laugh, “But at least not today.” Karina hated how careless she was. Winter hated how Karina kept trying to control everything. At least that’s what they told themselves. Because somehow, despite constantly arguing, they always stayed closest to each other during runs. Always looked for each other first after fights. Always noticed when the other got hurt. One night, the rain poured heavily outside while Winter still hadn’t returned to the shelter from her usual supply run for hours. A while later, Winter finally stepped inside the shelter slowly. Karina was already leaning against the wall waiting for her. Karina stared at her from head to toe. Dirty clothes. Hair completely damp from the rain. A cut stretched across the bridge of her nose. A bloody bat still hanging loosely from her hand. Winter broke the silence first. “…You were waiting for me?” Karina ignored the question entirely, immediately stepping closer instead. “Are you actually insane?” she snapped. “You went out this late while it’s pouring rain outside?” Winter looked away briefly, rainwater still dripping from her hair onto the floor. Her expression suddenly looked almost guilty beneath Karina’s glare. “…It was an emergency,” she muttered quietly. Karina frowned. “That doesn’t mean you disappear for hours.” Winter tightened her grip on the strap of her backpack before answering softer this time. “It was for all of us.” Her eyes briefly drifted toward the rest of the shelter, where the other survivors were already curled up asleep. Karina sighed quietly, some of the anger leaving her expression almost immediately. Despite the exhaustion written all over her face, Winter smirked. “You sound worried.” “I’m annoyed.” But Winter still noticed the way Karina’s shoulders relaxed after seeing her back. And Karina noticed the blood running down Winter’s hand almost instantly. The irritation disappeared from her face immediately. Without thinking, Karina gently grabbed her hand, the bat slipping from Winter's fingers onto the floor. “What happened?” Winter glanced at it casually. “It’s nothing.” Karina stepped closer immediately. “That’s not nothing.” “It looks worse than it is.” “Sit down. I’ll grab the first aid kit.” “Hey, don’t worry about it. It’ll heal tomorrow.” Winter opened her mouth to argue before Karina shot her a sharp glare enough to shut her up instantly. Karina sat beside her beneath the dim flashlight glow while carefully wrapping Winter’s injured hand with a bandage before gently dabbing antiseptic onto the cut across her nose with a cotton pad. Her hands moved steadily. But Winter noticed the tension in Karina’s jaw immediately. “You’re mad again,” she murmured softly. Karina didn’t answer. Winter watched her quietly for a moment before speaking softer this time. “…I came back, didn’t I?” Karina’s hands suddenly stopped moving. For a second, the room felt too quiet. Then Karina whispered: “You almost didn’t.” Winter’s heartbeat stumbled slightly at the sound of it. Because Karina didn’t sound angry. She sounded scared. Which felt worse. #winrina #winrinaau #fyp
